CO2 Resurfacing Laser

What is CO2 laser skin resurfacing?

The CO2 laser is an ablative treatment and is considered the best laser treatment option for clients who wish to produce new collagen and elastin, improve signs of aging, reduce skin laxity, wrinkles and fine lines, acne scarring, or other texture concerns.

How does the CO2 laser work?

As we age, our skin loses its smooth texture, we experience discoloration, and have issues elasticity.  CO2 laser skin resurfacing uses the power of carbon dioxide to rejuvenate the skin.

Here is a more in detailed explanation at how it works:
Mechanism of Action- The CO2 laser sends out a concentrated beam of light that pentrates through the skin’s surface. This light is absorbed by the water in your skin cells, causing the cells to disappear. This process removes the damaged outer layers of the skin (epidermis), encouraging the regeneration of healthier skin underneath. Stimulation of Collagen Production- While the laser removes the outer layers of skin (epidermis), it is also stimulating the production of collagen, (an essential protein) and elastin, leaving you with a more youthful appearance. Increased collagen production helps tighten and smooth the skin, leading to an long term improvement in your skins
tone and texture.

Commonly Asked Questions About CO2 Laser Treatments

What to expect during your treatment?

Before treatment, a prescription strength numbing cream is applied to numb the skin and make the treatment more comfortable. The CO2 laser treatment can take approximately 30-45 minutes depending on the depth and strength of treatment as well as size of the area being treated. Patients experience minimal discomfort during treatment. We also provide a cooling wand that blows cool air on the face to help with discomfort. You’ll also be provided with eyewear to shield your eyes from the laser while receiving your treatment.

After the procedure, your skin may be red and slightly swollen, but these side effects typically subside within a few days. Most patients can resume their normal activities within a few days to a week.

Aggressive CO2 patients typically have a downtime of 7-0 days. A milder setting may only have a 3-5 day downtime.

It is normal and to be expected for patients to experience some peeling and flaking of the skin. During this time, it’s important to keep the skin clean and moisturized and avoid sun exposure or other sources of heat. You will be provided with 3 travel sized skin care products after treatment. A follow up appointment will also be needed 2 weeks post treatment to check on your healing.

The number of treatments needed varies depending on your skin condition and desired results. In general, with an aggressive CO2 treatment, only 1 session may be needed to achieve the best results. If receiving a more mild CO2 treatment 1-3 sessions may be
needed depending on the patients goals. Remember , collagen can take up to 12 weeks to fully rebuild, so it’s important to wait until the 12 week mark before scheduling a 2 nd treatment session.

Laser skin resurfacing is generally considered safe, but like all medical procedures, it does carry some minimal risks. These risks can include scarring, infection, changes in skin pigmentation, and temporary or permanent changes in skin texture. Our providers are experiences, and will evaluate your skin before choosing an appropriate setting for you. This will help minimize the risk of side effects while maximizing your results.
