What is the Q-Switch for tattoo removal?
The Q-switched Yag laser has been the preferred laser of choice and really the “gold standard” in laser tattoo removal. It is the only laser suitable for all skin types and dark skin in particular, as the light it creates is not absorbed by the melanin (skin pigment) and therefore less likely to result in hypo or hyper-pigmentation.
How does it work in removing the tattoo ink?
The Q-Switch laser works by delivering energy at a rapid speed that it shatters the ink up into tiny particles. The body’s filtration system (or immune system) then comes in to carry off the shattered ink..
Unlike other lasers, the Yag overcomes the issue of excessive melanin absorption, targeting the ink and not the melanin. Dark blue and black inks respond really well to laser treatments. Lighter pigments like white, reds and pinks can be harder to remove. At this time, the q-switch does not remove colors like bright blues, and greens.
What to expect during treatment?
Depending on size and location of the tattoo to be removed, appointments are approximately 30 minutes long. You will feel a sharp rubber band smack while the laser targets the ink.
Healing and Downtime
Swelling, redness, and blistering is a normal response. No downtime is to be expected with tattoo removal, other than avoiding suns exposure. You should be able to resume normal activity following your appointment. You will be provided with post care instructions after your appointment.
